Donkey Kong Country is the game that saved the Super Nintendo. When Sony's first PlayStation arrived, people started getting drawn to its modern media format and promise of 3D visuals. Many thought the 16-bit SNES just wouldn't be able to keep up anymore. But a little company called Rare shocked us all by developing such an amazing and eye-catching new graphical style that no one could imagine the Super was actually capable of such graphical feats. But it was, and CGI graphics burst onto the scene to redefine and redirect the entire industry. Donkey Kong was entirely reinvented in the process too, transforming from a girlfriend-napping arcade villain to a necktie-wearing headlining hero. He's been restored as one of Nintendo's most notable mascots ever since.
The sequel to Rare's spectacular hit Donkey Kong Country was an inevitability. DKC2: Diddy's Kong Quest more than delivers in its ambitious aim of equaling and sometimes exceeding the standard set by its predecessor. Released at the end of 1995, as the title suggests, this is a quest for Diddy Kong, as he is joined by his lovely female companion, Dixie. Some fans were puzzled as to why the star of the series, Donkey Kong himself, was strangely omitted as a playable character from the second DKC of the trilogy. Regardless, the game boasts lush locales (including a charming sailing and pirate's motif), challenging levels, and an all-around engaging gameplay experience.
As the number at the end of the title suggests, Donkey Kong Country 3 is the third installment of Nintendo's monkey-themed platform game franchise. Whereas part two introduced a variety of wholesale improvements and upgrades to the DKC formula, the changes that this third game introduces are more low-key. Owners of the previous game will observe that the levels are a little more interesting and that the visuals are a touch nicer this time around. Since the improvements are so subtle, Donkey Kong Country 3 won't blow people away like Donkey Kong Country 2 did, but it's still a first-rate platformer that should satisfy a person's need to jump around and throw things.
